Overall Purpose

To address gaps in reading skills before they become barriers to overall academic success. High-impact strategies and the power of volunteer tutors help struggling readers attain grade-level proficiency by high school.

Program Specifics

Weekly after-school literacy program at Eastport Community Center:

  • Each boy is matched with a background-checked adult male tutor.
  • Tutors are selected and trained by the Seeds 4 Success Education Director.
  • A martial arts and physical fitness component promotes health and self-discipline.

“My mother and father were teachers, so maybe it’s in my DNA. Tutoring a bright and enthusiastic boy like Bryan seems to bring out the best in both of us. When I asked what kind of stories he likes best, he said ‘funny ones,’ and wrote a story’s first sentence: ‘I like to read upside down.’ We shared a good laugh.” – Eastport Boys Club tutor
